Your visa is expiring or has expired?

Stay longerExtend your visa

See what you must do if you have to stay longer due to COVID19

You must apply for a new visa if you want to stay longer in Australia. You cannot apply for a new visa in Australia if your visa has a condition that prevents further stay.

Your visa options and what you must do to remain lawful while you apply for a new visa will depend on your situation.

Check your visa expiry date and conditions

Before you explore your options to stay longer, you need to know:

  • when your visa expires
  • whether you have a condition that prevents further stay
  • your other visa conditions

Check your visa expiry date and visa conditions in VEVO, the myVEVO app or your visa grant letter. You can download the free myVEVO app from the Apple and Google app stores.

If you are in Australia on an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), check your ETA expiry and conditions through our Check an ETA service.

If your visa has a condition that prevents further stay, you must leave Australia before your visa expires.

You can apply for other visas to return, but only after you have left Australia.

Explore new visa options and apply

If your visa does not have a condition that prevents further stay, you may be able to apply for a new visa while your current visa is valid.

Check your current visa

Your current visa might offer a pathway to another visa you can apply for.

Find your current or most recent visa on the list of all visas.

Other visa options

Explore your visa options to find a new visa that suits you and check whether you can apply for it.

Remain lawful on a bridging visa

If you apply for a new visa before your current visa expires, we will usually grant you a Bridging visa A (BVA).

Your BVA keeps you lawful in Australia when:

  • your current visa expires, and
  • we have not made a decision on your new visa application.

Do not leave Australia on your BVA if you need to return. Your BVA will end when you leave and you will not be allowed to re-enter.

If you want to leave and re-enter Australia, you must apply for a Bridging visa B (BVB) after you have been granted the BVA.

If your visa has expired

Your options for applying for a new visa are limited if your last visa has already expired. Explore your visa options.

You will be here unlawfully if you remain here without a valid visa. We expect you to leave.
